Between the late 1960s and early 2020s, median home prices rose from about three times to over five times the median household income, making homeownership less affordable for the middle class despite steady ownership rates. While housing availability per capita increased by 29%, upfront costs like down payments grew by 46%, now exceeding annual income. Lower mortgage rates reduced monthly payments, but higher initial costs and rising prices have complicated access to homeownership.
