Flood risk surges in South Carolina: Lowcountry residents face highest threat

Flood risk in coastal South Carolina, especially in the Lowcountry, is increasing and expected to rise over the next 25 years. Over 67,000 residents in Beaufort and Charleston Counties face the highest risk, with more than 1 million in high-risk Lowcountry areas. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be more active than average, increasing chances of flooding from tropical cyclones. The South Carolina Emergency Division provides yearly updates on evacuation zones and emergency plans to help residents stay prepared.
