While the national median starter home price is under $199,000, high-cost markets require much higher incomes to qualify, often over $200,000 annually. California leads with 105 cities, followed by New York and New Jersey. Sun Belt markets see some relief from new housing, unlike the Northeast, where shortages keep prices high.
